If you ever wondered your dog twitches, chatters or move their paws while sleeping, it’s because they are dreaming. Researchers found that dogs have similar sleep patterns and brain activity as humans, and that smaller breed dogs tend to dream more than larger breed ones.

Your furry friend has 18 muscles in their ears that allow them to raise, lower, rotate, tilt and move them around independently so that they can hear better and express their emotions. If your pooches' ears are upright and facing forward, that means they are engaged. If the ears are pulled back a bit, they are feeling friendly. And if the ears are tightly laid back against the dog’s head, they are feeling fearful or shy.

4. Dogs have sweat glands in their paws.

Dogs have a type of sweat gland called merocrine glands, which are located in their paw pads. Even though they sweat out through the paw pads, their main form of cooling down is panting. So, when your long-haired dogs pant a lot, they are definitely feeling toasty.

5. Dogs could be left or right pawed.

In a study done, its shown that ambilateral dogs exhibit slightly less aggression towards strangers which in fact, were the left-pawed dogs that showed that behavior the most. And in another study done it showed that potential guide dogs that are right-pawed have a higher success rate in their training programs.

You might have got some funny smell from your pooches’ paws. Its natural. This is called “Frito feet”, and it happens when sweat and bacteria build up in the paws, which then gives off a yeasty odor that can smell like corn chips.

7. Some dogs are fast and could beat a cheetah.

According to researcher Alan Wilson, "Cheetahs and greyhounds are known to use a rotary gallop and physically they are remarkably similar, yet there is this bewitching difference in maximum speed of almost a factor of two." Greyhounds are the fastest breed of dog by far. They can reach a top speed of 45 mph within seconds of starting to run. Whereas cheetahs can get up to 70mph. Greyhounds, could easily run at speeds in excess of 35mph for seven miles. So despite the cheetah’s head start, they’d soon overtake!

8. “Dog’s breath” is actually unhealthy.

Bad breath is not uncommon in dogs. But it has to be taken seriously. Your dog's bad breath could be a sign of an underlying health issue, so although you may be tempted to just grin and bear it, it's important to take your dog to see the vet if they are experiencing chronic bad breath.

9. Dogs are as smart as a two-year-old child.

Out of all the studies done on dogs, one of the study shows that dogs can learn over 100 words and gestures, which puts your toddler and pup on par when it comes to brains. With so much intelligence they can trick you and other dogs for treats.
