1] Madhubani Art

Madhubani Art finds its roots in the Mithila region of Bihar, painted with natural colours. The painter, himself/ herself prepares the colour. This art form is usually depicted on the walls, and painted by the women of the house. The Artform depicts the scenes from Indian mythology, Royal courts and Social events.

2] Warli Art

Warli Art was and is practiced by the Warli tribe in some parts or Maharashtra, near Nashik. It is a tribal form of art which gained popularity in modern times. It is one of the ancient form of art witch dates back to 3000 BC. It depicts the events from day to day life of tribal people such as hunting, dancing, gatherings. Warli art was painted on the walls of the huts. It is painted on a dark background with a white colour prepared from rice past and gum. It uses basic geometric patterns such as triangles, circles, squares, lines, dots.

3] Kalamkari Art

Kalamkari derives its name from the words ‘kalam’ (pen) and ‘kari’ (craftsmanship). Kalamkari art originated in the states of Andra Pradesh and Telangana. It depicts the stories from Indian Mythology, such as Mahabharata, Ramayana and Bhagavatam. Bamboo stick is used as a pen with a cotton attached at the tip. The cotton soaks the colour and hence works like a pen. It is a compact form of Artwork.

4] Phad Art

Phad paintings originated in the state of Rajasthan. Initially it would depict the tales of local deities named Devnarayanji and Pabuji. Earlier though, only the Joshi family were masters in this artform. The priest known as ‘Bhopas’ and ‘Bhopis’ would unroll the painting and narrate the story to the locals by singing and dancing. Natural pigments are used in this painting style and is also painted on cotton cloth.

5] Mural Painting

The word Mural is derived from the Latin word Murus which means readied wall. Initially Murals were influenced by Kerala's topography but eventually it started depicting Indian Mythology. Murals are painted in two ways. One is Fresco style where colours are applied on a slightly wet surface and the another one where the colours are used on a dry surface is dry fresco style.

6] Gond Art

Gond Art derives it’s name from Gond tribe of central India. Gond painting are drawn and than painted with a repetitive pattern to fill the gaps inside the shape. Each artist has his or her own signature patterns such as dots, curved lines, dashes etc. The colours are extracted from natural elements such as various types soil, charcoal, bean leaves, cow dunk etc. Gond paintings depicts local flora and fauna, mythical beasts, mythological characters, Mahua tree (has a prominent role in Gond culture) etc. Initially these paintings were painted on the walls and floor of a house.
